StranksLab Team Retreat: A Week of Insight, Adventure, and Camaraderie in the Peak District
Last week, the StranksLab team embarked on a memorable retreat to the Peak District, blending research, relaxation, and team bonding in a stunning countryside setting.
The journey began on Monday with a cultural stop in Nottingham, including a visit to England’s oldest pub- Ye Old Trip to Jerusalem Inn, before heading to the converted Green Man Pub near Leek — the group’s home for the week. The evening featured an inspiring talk by Professor Sam Stranks, takeaway pizza, and some fiercely competitive darts and pool matches.
Tuesday kicked off with engaging research discussions, followed by a scenic walk and cave exploration led by Rebecca. The team cooked dinner together, rounding off the day with board games and laughter.
Wednesday marked the final stretch of the research sessions, filled with insightful conversations and strengthened team connections. In the afternoon, the group headed to Tittesworth Reservoir for paddleboarding and kayaking, returning to a roaring fire and another delicious team-cooked meal. The evening ended with games and a lively round of charades.
Thursday brought a spontaneous hike into the peaks, where the team made some furry friends — local dogs and sheep — along the way. The retreat concluded with a relaxed dinner at a nearby pub, capping off a week of learning, adventure, and shared experiences.
Special thanks to our social secretaries, Shenyu Nie and Tom Selby, for their meticulous planning and coordination — their efforts made the retreat truly unforgettable.
